ur attitude in these days of political discount has
changed little since the age of comfort set in. We want to
let some one else worry about our problems, we want to let
the government fix everything that is wrong, but not with
our money.
It is time we as citizens took responsibility for our own living space. We know we are primarily responsible for our personal health and well-being, and that of our immediate family. If we can at least take on this very basic ecological responsibility to heart, we will advance as a People and change the Earth.
Sloth and irresponsibility are to blame for not removing junk cars, furniture, rusting appliances and the like from our home's surroundings. The government environmental superfund has nothing to do with this type of waste, and yet we continue to expect them to "do something" about our own back yard.
HUD does not need to build more public housing. Our cities are full of homes that only need to be cleaned up, painted and cared for, even if we don't own them. The same homes we neglect were once the proud homes of our ancestors. Some work is required to remove the debris and apply a coat of paint, to make us proud to live there once again.
We should start a nationwide "America the
Beautiful" campaign involving family effort, not government control. The HUD administration
can set up a public/private fund to provide
for the materials needed by the those unable
to pay for their own. Let the People work
on improving their own lot.It is shocking
to see what we now overlook in the name of
private ownership.
Abandoned businesses, chicken coops and farm
equipment litter the countryside. Ghost malls
and forsaken 5-10 stores clutter our city
centers. Graffiti is tolerated, giving the
sinking impression of social decay.
Today we use land as if it were disposable. Only if it is economically feasible to we ever work to reclaim it. If the bottom line doesn't add up, we do nothing.
Yes, we need to take pride in our Environment once again. Let's get off the couch and live for Life's sake. If we can not take care of our own space, how can we expect to take on the responsibility for the enormous tasks that lie ahead!
Let's get organized for the New Era: family empowerment through individual responsibility.
